Where to look for a designer: Search graphic design associations (including http://member.aiga.com ) for their membership lists, which are often organized by city and state. Check out design industry publications, which publish designers in every issue, and also publish design annuals that display the work that they deem best in a variety of categories. Look around at what other companies are doing. Call the ones whose work you admire and ask for their recommendations. Ask the designers you know about other designers whose work (and work ethic) they respect. You'd be surprised how often professionals will recommend each other when they can't address your needs themselves. When you find a few designers or agencies you're interested in, check their references. And then interview them with these Ten Crucial questions: How does the firm like to work? Who are its clients? How knowledgeable it is about them? How is it viewed by them? By its peers? What is its design process? What kind of design experience does it have? What kind of results has it achieved? Who will work on your project? Does the firm understand the business? Do you like the people you've met? If you find yourself wondering whether all of these questions are really necessary, ask yourself how seriously you want to compete in the marketplace. Because that is exactly what a good designer will help you do. | ||||||||||
