Tips on Fame - From Fortune

Postcard Marketing Secrets subscriber Fortune McLemore is a fine art photographer and an all-around enthusiastic person from Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.

Fortune sells a line of 13 products that feature her photographs. Her line includes aprons, baby products, calendars, coasters, framed prints, greeting cards, mugs, mouse pads and postcards. Check 'em out at:

And Fortune is a Passionate Postcarder. She says, "I discovered how great they are through the U.S. Postal Service. They have a fantastic small business section on their site." The URL for that section is:

Fortune continues, "For $.79 each, you can design your postcard, and then they'll make the postcard, put the postage on it, and deliver it for you. I reached 80 companies last fall this way—for only $64.00."

Now, for a small mailing, that is a pretty good deal. And Fortune reports that the cards were quite a hit.

She says, "People can carry them around—one of my prospects liked the card so much, she showed it to her mother! And they're beautiful to look at. They're a perfect format for showing off my photos—and for my product line. And they're quick to design and send out this way. I would normally do 10 at a time in less than thirty minutes."

When I said that Fortune McLemore is an enthusiastic person, I wasn't kidding. In just a few e-mails, she pretty well had me talked into creating a Cafe Press store to sell my own stuff. (Postcard tee shirts, anyone?) More details on that project in future issues....

Here are some handy postcard customization tips from Fortune:

"With postcards, I can emphasize certain products over others for a particular business.

"For restaurants, I can emphasize the mugs, aprons, and framed prints (for their walls). For bookstores, I can emphasize the tote bags, for their customers to carry their books in, and coffee mugs, for their coffee or tea. There are a million ways to do this for so many businesses—quickly and inexpensively.

"That's the beauty of direct mail, anyway—you can customize it, relatively inexpensively. And you can do it without your competitors finding out right away, like they would with a newspaper ad."

Another Fortune-ate advantage of postcards: "With a postcard, I can change major information, like a phone number, easily, quickly, and cheaply if I have to. I'm not stuck with an out-of-date phone number—and thus, an ad I can't use.

"And, you can show your products much more easily in direct mail, like a postcard, than you can in a display ad. If you want color in your ad, to show your product better, you'd need a fortune. And people still might not respond to your ad. I'm currently mailing to restaurants, and I can put pictures of my products in the mailing—cheaply. I couldn't do that in a display ad.

"Direct mail is definitely a good way to go. And postcards are part of that." Hear, hear. Thank you, Fortune.
